Listen, Listen, Listen Linda Makeup Does Expire!!
We all have done it...used the
mascara longer than we should have or have that one eyeshadow or lipstick we
bought 3 years ago that we only use for special occasions. Makeup is
expensive so I know it hurts to throw it out but using expired makeup or skincare
products can be really bad for the skin.
Expired makeup or skincare
products can cause irritation, redness, bumps, rashes and
blisters. If you don't disinfect and clean your makeup and brushes it can
cause a buildup of bacteria in turn causing infections. Past its
expiration date makeup can also change consistency and efficiency. It can dry
or become watery or the SPF can loose its effectiveness or sometimes it
causes no issues.
Here are the general guidelines I
follow:
o
Wash your hands before applying
makeup
o
Do not share makeup
o
Do not add water to dilute
makeup.
o
Keep cosmetics in a dry area, away
from direct heat or sunlight
o
When you buy a new makeup or
skincare product and take a sharpie and write a date of purchase or first use
Toss it if:
o
you see can visibly
see mold
o
there is a change
is texture, color or smell
o
there has been prolonged heat
exposure (Note: leave makeup in your car during summer months)
Expiration timeframes
o
Foundation - 6 to 12 months.
o
BB Creams - 12 months
o
Mascara - 3-6 months
o
Concealer -6 to 12 months.
o
Cream Eye Shadow - 6 to 12 months.
o
Powder Eye Shadow - 12 months
o
Cream Blush - 6 to 12 months.
o
Powder blush - 12 months
o
Liquid Eyeliner - up to 6 months
o
Lipstick - 12 months
o
Moisturizers - up to 2 years
o
Serums - up to 2 years
o
Eye Creams - 12 months
o
Sunscreen - 12 months
At the end of the day everyone has
their dos and don'ts so use your best judgement. You can also check with a
dermatologist. They might able to give you some guidelines.
